About Us
MyIBD is a non-profit organization that aims to spread information and create support groups for people with UC and Crohn's disease.
Why IBD?
We choose to research IBD because of its negative impact on high school and college students. IBD can cause students to miss class or have trouble studying due to discomfort and high levels of pain. Our main goal is to inform students about IBD so that they understand how to treat it and are better prepared to prevent it.
What is IBD?
IBD, an inflammatory bowel syndrome, is a lifelong condition that causes painful swelling in the intestines. It is a condition that affects up to three million Americans of all genders and ages, but it is most prominent among teenagers and young adults ranging from ages 15-30. Symptoms of IBD include abdominal pain, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and, although rare, can even cause joint pain, kidney stones, and more. Patients with IBD can receive treatment through surgery or oral medications prescribed by a doctor. Complications from IBD can be prevented by eating smaller meals, maintaining a food diary, getting plenty of sleep, and managing stress.
Why support us?
Teens struggling with IBD have a hard time transitioning into an adolescent life in which they themselves must manage infusions, dietary restrictions and other treatment/precautionary measures. Our group aims to ease this transition in the slightest bit and any form of support would help us in achieving this goal.
